  • Provide legal advice to city council and city departments regarding open meeting laws, public records requests, and other general municipal law matters

  • Assist City Attorney on administrative matters such as the annual budget, inter/intra departmental projects and personnel issues

  • Team with the City Attorney to represent and advise the city council regarding complex city and city/county construction projects such as the Bakersfield Centennial Gardens Arena (Convention Center)

  • Provide representation at commission and subcommittee meetings; provide commission with advice and alternative solutions to legally and politically complex land use planning matters such as transportation planning and acquisition, large-scale commercial and residential development, annexations, environmental law and Endangered Species Act and address media regarding city positions on land use proposals of wide-spread public interest.

  • Serve as member of task force consisting of land developers, environmental groups, realtor and building associations with the purpose of negotiating and implementing streamlined subdivision regulations

City of Bakersfield Code of Enforcement, Building Department, Public Works Department, Real Estate Acquisition Department, and Police Department Legal Counsel

  • Advise city departments and city council regarding real estate acquisition and eminent domain litigation for public works projects including convention center, street and freeway rights of way

  • Defend City Police Department in Section 1983 Civil Rights litigation; assist in creating volunteer programs for community-based policing efforts; draft anti-trespassing/loitering and graffiti prevention legislation; draft legislation to limit negative effects of adult entertainment establishments; perform drug house nuisance, liquor store nuisance, anti-prostitution nuisance abatements and represent city in media coverage generated from such efforts

  • Write Code Enforcement Policies and Procedures Manual and assist Building and Code Enforcement Departments in processing and prosecuting city code, Uniform Building Code and substandard housing violations
